Seems like another social-networking thing. Email chain letters obviously are more likely to get forwarded than the snail-mail get-rich variety. The emails are driven in part by the good-luck/bad-luck aspect, feeding on superstitions, and in part by ongoing networking with friends. I hope that this will help

Mostly conformity and how impressional people can be. When people see one person sending it, they think "wow it must be accurate, I should forward it!" Plus like snugbug said, these chain emails feed off of superstitions. It's mostly a "just to be safe" kind of feeling, if that makes sense.
