Two families are vacationing together, driving in separate cars. The Harris family averages 45 mph, leaving Hometown 6 minutes ahead of the Arlen family, who averages 58 mph. How long will it take the Arlen family to overtake the Harris family?
HI!!
don't you hate word problems?
this one not too hard thought we need to know how far you travel if you go 48 mph for 6 minutes any idea?
No idea.
60 minutes in an hour right?
making 6 minutes one tenth of an hour
what is one tenth of 48?
4.8
ok so they have a 4.5 mile head start then distance equals rate times time the distance for the first car is \[4.5+45t\] and for the second it is \[58t\] since evidently they meet at the same time you can solve \[4.5+45t=58t\] for \(t\)
btw i made a mistake, it was 45 mph not 48 one tenth is 4.5 not 4.8
