Which personal pronoun correctly completes the sentence? What is its use? Even though the Millers knew it would erupt, Old Faithful's geyser surprised ___________ every time. A. they; indirect object B. them; direct object C. they; direct object D. them; indirect object

OpenStudy (love_ranaa):

Well, we can cross A and C. They wouldn't make sense. Now we have to choose between B and D.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay i got that part but how do you know if it is indirect or direct ?:)

OpenStudy (love_ranaa):

Direct object is the the thing being acted upon or receiving the action in a sentence.

OpenStudy (love_ranaa):

The easiest way: Look for the verb and ask who or what EXAMPLE: I fed my dog. Fed is the dog. I fed what? My dog, so dog is the D.O.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay

OpenStudy (anonymous):

subject + verb +who or what (will answer the direct object.)

OpenStudy (love_ranaa):

I meant fed is the verb :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Jim built his granddaughter a sandcastle on the beach. Jim (subject)+ built (verb) (who or what did jim built) = Sand castle (direct object) now who or what is the sand castle going to or for =granddaughter (indirect object)
