Why do historians consider the greatest achievement of the Byzantine Empire to be the preservation of Greek and Roman cultures?

Still after the fall of the roman empire and the small Greek states the byzantine empire still kept their cultures making it one. if it wasn't for the byzantines the roman and ancient Greek cultures would be gone or little known.

because greek and roman cultures influced many other cultures and they also preseved them and keep both Greek and Roman veiws alive along with there history or something
