An example would be:
Hace dos años que jugué fútbol.
2 years ago I played soccer.

To say how long something has been happening, it would be:
Hace + time period + que + present tense of verb.

To say how long AGO something happened, it would be:
Hace + time period + que + preterite tense of verb.
