The Cultural Revolution was an attempt to rid the country of everything of all influences that might cause the people to question the Party's authority. College professors and teachers were among the first to go to "re-education camps." Nothing like getting shipped to a far off province and being forced to do agricultural labor for months or years to get those silly ideas about education out of your system
