why are protist important what do they do and what are they

OpenStudy (anonymous):

1 They play a role in the decomposition of matter, which, in turn, frees up resources to be used by living organisms. 2) Many members of the protist kingdom are photosynthetic, providing the world with a fair portion of much needed oxygen. 3) Protists are also found as a main base in many food chains, and without them, the whole chain would likely collapse. 4) Protists are especially important to human beings and are an excellent source of commercial goods, antibiotics, etc. They also play important roles in many commercial processes due to their metabolic products/methods. 5) Another reason they are important (though not beneficial), is due to the fact that many of them are parasitic or pathogenic, causing great harm to other organisms.
