I am not understanding the solution of problem set 1 problem 1-A 6. Can someone give a more detail solution ? Thanks
Hi, not sure if you've already worked this out. Imagine the plane in a 2-space of x and y and two vectors. The plane is going north, let's say straight up the y axis, so x = any constant and the wind is north-east, let's say perfectly north east meaning a vector represented by y=x so a slope of 1. Now you have two vectors one which is essentially x=C and x=y. Now you can visualise two vectors, x=y will have a magnitude of 50mph and x=C will have one of 200mph, now how can we solve this to find the resultant vector? Well the plane is 200j since it does not move along x. For the wind, think of a triangle and pythagoras theorem! 50 = sqrtA + sqrtB - no? So now you have your two vectors which you can simply add together to solve for the velocity it will be travelling at. Hope this has helped
thank you very much. I understand it now. :)
