Improvements to troll banning features? Recently I have been seeing a lot of rude people who incite conflict with words like "you should go die" and other, less proper terms. It disturbs the peace of this site and prevents students from getting the help they need. While I understand the chats can be used for small talk, I don't believe negativity should exist so prominently there. Any ideas/progress on stopping these individuals would be appreciated (wow that sounded really stuck-up, sorry). Thanks. kitti P.S. I have realized that being too informal on this site can lead to petty misunderstandings and conflicts simply because communications are twisted and messages do not get across clearly; therefore, I have resolved to be as professional as possible without sounding arrogant on this site. ...It's not working is it.

OpenStudy (kittiwitti1):

@Abhisar @Preetha

OpenStudy (confluxepic):

Yeah. The chats have been getting worse day by day. You may support the idea of specific chat mods.

OpenStudy (kittiwitti1):

? Chat mods?

OpenStudy (kittiwitti1):

I thought the chats were (loosely) supervised. :o

OpenStudy (confluxepic):

It's still an idea.

OpenStudy (kittiwitti1):

I know, but I'm not quite sure what a "chat mod" is. o_o; Sorry, I'm a bit dumb.

OpenStudy (confluxepic):

A chat mod would be a specific person (not a regular mod) who will patrol the chats and will have the ability to warn and suspend a user in the chats, delete a chat message, and ban a person in the chats.

OpenStudy (kittiwitti1):

I posted this a few seconds ago in chats. I hope it helps - http://prntscr.com/6zj1j5

OpenStudy (kittiwitti1):

Oh, that sounds like a pretty good idea :o Who should I message to ask about this?

OpenStudy (confluxepic):

I've already asked about it. I suggested it. I do not know who suggested it before me but I think it was @poopsiedoodle

OpenStudy (kittiwitti1):

Oh thank you :o

JoelTheBoss (joel_the_boss):

chats get you killed

OpenStudy (kittiwitti1):

...Okay.

OpenStudy (confluxepic):

@Joel_the_boss would know.

OpenStudy (yanasidlinskiy):

Negativity and positivity will always exist no matter what ways you'll try to use to get rid of it. That's just how users of OS are. That's part of life and users just come here on OS just to get rid of depression, stress and etc. I'm sure there is a way to stop this online, but in real life, reality(excuse me for my language) HECK NO! It's life and negativity will always exist. It's almost the same thing as have a good and a bad side. Both sides will exist and there's really nothing that could be done to stop those users. If there is ANY way to stop this, I'm sure it'll just encourage the user to take more actions. - Just my opinion. I hope no one gets offended.

OpenStudy (confluxepic):

There is a way to stop it. @YanaSidlinskiy It's called the end of the human race.

OpenStudy (yanasidlinskiy):

Yes, that's referring to reality. Real life. We're talking online socializing.

OpenStudy (kittiwitti1):

Well yeah, but this is a strictly (?) professional site meant for schoolwork, tutoring and general course assistance... not users ranting about their lives. :\

OpenStudy (kittiwitti1):

Complaining a little is fine by me but people coming on to talk about their lives and then turning around and snapping at people by cursing at them and putting them down is NOT. :x

OpenStudy (yanasidlinskiy):

It isn't right. you're correct. Although I want to let you know that there's really not much anything that moderators could do. And that's about it.

OpenStudy (kittiwitti1):

Oh. Alright. :c

TheSmartOne (thesmartone):

Maybe banning the word 'die', 'death' and other words to be changed to positive words would help the negativity. Although people could still evade the filter and try to use those words.

TheSmartOne (thesmartone):

and other negative words*

OpenStudy (kittiwitti1):

Well yes, but people could also report for those. A game I play, AQW, actually detects common censor avoids and mutes those users for a select amount of time depending on the word uttered. That could be implemented here. :o

eclipsedstar (eclipsedstar):

Getting quite annoying how the chats revert from roleplay to suicide to love confessions...way too much drama that is making a lot of users leave (from my experience of seeing).

OpenStudy (kittiwitti1):

@EclipsedStar Yes! :o I'd medal you in support if I could, but I already gave one to con. ; ;

eclipsedstar (eclipsedstar):

It's fine! :)

eclipsedstar (eclipsedstar):

About chat mods, I don't think someone is willing to stare at chats all day long...

OpenStudy (e.mccormick):

The simple solution is to get rid of the chats. This becomes more likely every day that they get worse.

OpenStudy (yanasidlinskiy):

It's a great way Eric. Although sometimes users need to sidetrack. A person cannot just focus with school. They need some time to hang out and talk. It's similar in real life. We can't focus on school always. We need a break to have some fun.

OpenStudy (samsungfanboy):

^ yeah yana, lets go have some fun ;) lolololol

OpenStudy (nobrainiachere):

\(\color{blue}{\text{Originally Posted by}}\) @EclipsedStar About chat mods, I don't think someone is willing to stare at chats all day long... \(\color{blue}{\text{End of Quote}}\) Jay already does. He stalks every single chat he is in. Isn't that right? @Jaynator495

OpenStudy (e.mccormick):

Yes, which is why he has to get suspended at times to catch up on school and why several users have left when they become chat addicted.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I seen this happen way to often, and remove the chats would seem like the best possible solution, though I would highly be against it. The already chaotic people would seep into the questions and would spam up the place. And being too formal in the question without any chats to help with that formlessness, would just cause a lot of frustration. Chat moderation would be a pretty good idea, though i see the problems with that too. And because we are humans, we all won't agree to disagree or even see eye to eye, I think the chats could still work. I'm not entirely sure where I was trying to go with this, But nevertheless these are my thoughts.

eclipsedstar (eclipsedstar):

@fierstar123 I appreciate the input, but I have a counter for that. Posts are actually easier to monitor (from my experience from seeing the mods). The chats aren't so vigorously monitored like spam posts. "And being too formal in the question without any chats to help with that formlessness, would just cause a lot of frustration." Not really sure what this means, but the chats don't really help bring attention to a post unless someone of a high ss puts their link. "And because we are humans, we all won't agree to disagree or even see eye to eye, I think the chats could still work." Can you please elaborate? :) My point in this: If people are going to continue to leave because of cyber bullying and being emotionally hurt, and if the chats continue to do more harm than good, I do agree that yes, the chats aren't necessary. This is a study site meant to help others, not to chit-chat for hours on end.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I agree chats have been way to harsh lately.

OpenStudy (e.mccormick):

Personally, I think they need to run chat through a more comprehensive filter system.

OpenStudy (poopsiedoodle):

comp and I both suggested it, and there might be other people who have also brought up the idea. Something definitely does need to be done.

jaynator495 (jaynator495):

Well... tbh i watch all the chats and know when im mentioned, but i dont intervien to often

OpenStudy (anonymous):

spam \(\color{#FF4930}{Trolled}\)

OpenStudy (yanasidlinskiy):

Yes, Eric! I do agree. They need to be filtered more.
