Many ocean-dwelling animals can use sound waves to communicate with other animals and locate food and obstacles over longer distances than can land-dwelling animals. How is this possible? Oceans have less pollution than air does. Ocean-dwelling animals produce louder sound waves. Sound waves travel farther in water than in air. Sound waves travel faster in air than in water.
