Depending on who you ask, both Republicans and Democrats have positive and negative attributes to them especially depending on when in history you want to talk about them. Both parties today are very different from what they were back thirty, forty, or a hundred years ago. For example, PBS has description of both parties and how they related to the rise and fall of slavery in the 19th century:
