Sign language? Can someone help me figure out how to "gloss" a story in ASL? Thanks!

OpenStudy (supernova_sonntag):

Any specific questions? If it is a story I would write it out in English first and then change it to gloss. Topic comment structure, times go at the beginnings of sentences, WH go at the end, ect.

It gives me a story and then tells me to gloss it I don't understand how to do that. :(

OpenStudy (supernova_sonntag):

Take it sentence by sentence and make sure that the sentence is topic, comment structure. Make sure that any times listed are in the beginning of the sentence, and that the WH questions are at the end of the sentence. If you have multiple things to say in a sentence you can "list" them or if there are three things you can "shoulder-shift". If a classifier is needed you can go CL: and after the colon write whatever the classifier. Example: English: Once upon a time, a little girl named Red Riding hood went to visit her grandmother who lived in the woods. ASL: LONG-AGO topic: HAPPEN YOUNG GIRL NAME, comment: LITTLE RED RIDE HOOD (optionally:) set up temporary name sign topic: GRANDMOTHER, comment: GIRL GO VISIT topic: GRANDMOTHER rhet-q.: LIVE WHERE? comment: FOREST

No problem, hope that helped :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Okay this might be a stupid question so if it is I'm sorry. You said that you use each sentence as a new thing but it they are signing you a story how do you know when the sentence ends? I appreciate all your help!(:

OpenStudy (supernova_sonntag):

Never stupid lol. Every sentence in the English version of the story. I translate one English sentence at a time usually.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Oh yeah I forgot to put it in English first thank you so much for helping me!!!!

You can use a dictionary, or go on google.
