The sum of four consecutive integers is 74. Which is the first integer?

I know it's 17 but I need to explain why.

so if first no is "x"
then second no "x + 1"
third no "x + 2"
and fourth no "x + 3"
so x + (x + 1) + (x + 2) + (x + 3) = 74
