These are the ways Pacific Northwest Native Americans understood the land on which they lived differently from how European American settlers viewed the land. Native people did not understand ownership of land. Certain groups inherited traditional rights to hunt, fish or live on a given area, but taking possession of land was foreign to them. The European American settlers, believed in owning land, a view which often led to boundary disputes.
