CHECK ANSWER PLEASE! MEDAL @jigglypuff314 @dan815 @jim_thompson5910

OpenStudy (studygurl14):

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

probability that event A does NOT happen = 1 - (probability event A happens) probability you do NOT get 2 heads & 1 tail = 1 - (probability you get 2 heads & 1 tail)

OpenStudy (studygurl14):

Odds is different from probability.

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

they're related ideas though

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

probability of getting 2 H, 1 T = 3/8

OpenStudy (studygurl14):

correct. so prob of not getting that is 5/8 So, 5/3

OpenStudy (studygurl14):

correct?

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

it should be 5/8 since 1 - (3/8) = 8/8 - 3/8 = 5/8

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

you cannot have a probability larger than 1 5/3 = 1.667 > 1

OpenStudy (studygurl14):

bu that's probability, not odds. odds is prob of success over prob of failture

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

if they wanted to list odds, then they would have written "odds are 5 to 3" the 5 referring to events of not getting 2H,1T the 3 referring to events of getting 2H,1T

OpenStudy (studygurl14):

My book says" "The odds of the successful outcome of an event is the ratio of the probability of its success to the probability of its failure \(\large Odds=\Large\frac{P(s)}{P(f)}\)

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

oh strange, I've never seen odds defined like that before

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

so if that's the case, then yes you're correct

OpenStudy (studygurl14):

Okay, thank you

OpenStudy (dan815):

There is success and failure Success Prob + Failure prob = 100% =1 faiulre Prob = 1-success prob =1-3/8 =5/8
