Can someone show me the steps to solve for the total amount of hamburgers and the total amount of cheeseburgers please? Hamburgers sell for $3.00 each and cheeseburgers sell for $4.00 each. Bob sold a total of 400 burgers at the Marion Popcorn Festival, and he had total sales of $1,450. How many hamburgers did Bob sell? How many cheeseburgers did Bob sell? Thanks in advance. :)

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

what 2 variables do you want to use @inlovewith5ds ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I can use x for cheeseburgers and y for hamburgers

@jim_thompson5910

OpenStudy (tarantulagirl98):

i can help :) let me do the equation first, then ill explain if it makes sense lol ;p

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

sorry I got booted off

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

that will work x = number of cheeseburgers sold y = number of hamburgers sold

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

"Bob sold a total of 400 burgers" so what can we form as an equation with x and y?

OpenStudy (tarantulagirl98):

hopefully, i can write the equation lol ;p

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Thank you.

OpenStudy (tarantulagirl98):

x+y=400 ??

OpenStudy (anonymous):

We're trying to find how many cheeseburgers were sold out of the 400, and hamburgers.. vise versa

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

inlovewith5ds, do you see how Tarantulagirl98 formed that equation?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yes, i do.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I'm having a time trying to minus from the sides.

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

which variable do you want to isolate in x+y=400

OpenStudy (anonymous):

x. :)

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

so you need to do what to both sides?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

minus the y from both sides
