A sentence is in the passive voice if you find yourself asking, "by who?" For example, with the third sentence, you're left asking, "Wait, WHO gave them 1000 dollars?" Another example of the passive voice is the sentence, "The house was painted." You're like, "WHO painted the house?" The fourth sentence here is only talking about the fundraising folks; you're not left wondering who did the action.
