Frederick Santiago Do you remember “The City upon the Hill” in which all eyes of the people would be upon them? You might not because during the 16th, 17th and 18th century the Puritans were not the best example. They were strict and followed the Bible’s lessons firmly. If there was failure to live upon the Bible and its teachings, punishments could be severe. For them morality of religion was a very important factor in their lives. There was no tolerance for people who did not believe as they did. They thought their only obligation was to praise God. In addition, they thought the philosophy structured by them was the most desirable way to live by. In the 16th century when King Henry VIII created the Anglican Church, due to a disagreement between the Roman Catholic Church. The Puritans wanted to internally purify the corruption in the Anglican Church, but after being unable to accomplish it, they left to the newly discovered world. They established their rules of how they were to live. That were mainly based on the Old Testament. The Old Testament talks about revenge, punishment and harsh rules. For that reason we see where the ideals of the Puritans come from. As well as finding out the punishments that would be given to the people who disobeyed. Such examples of these horrid penalties were if a kid curses out or talks bad about their parents they would be sentenced to death. If anyone performed adultery, they were beheaded. In some cases if somebody had a grudge on someone or acted abnormal in their religious practice they might have been sentenced to death for being witches. A great example of this was the Salem Witch trials. Even sometimes when a person sinned they would be humiliated in front of everybody and treated like a nobody. All the Puritans were obliged to follow the divine law. Which included spiritual cleanliness, orderliness and obedience. The Puritans agreed with the consumption of alcohol and smoking. But they totally disagreed with the idea of excess. They also believed that they were example for the whole world, but that is very ironic. Due to the fact that they gave an example, but not such a good one. Reading the Bible was very important to them, but that was the only thing allowed to read. Expression of one’s thoughts was not allowed and was considered dangerous to the Puritan religion. The Puritan beliefs are controversial and were very demanding. Being unable to follow the heavenly rules would lead to a life of humiliation, dishonor and shame. It would also lead to cruel punishment or even death. They were followers of the Bible, especially the Old Testament and would do anything to maintain a stable relationship with God. The followed rules that were purity, uniformity and faithfulness. They would not hesitate to correct the sinful. They thought that the best way to live one’s own life was to follow their principles and follow in their foot steps.
