Karyotypes can be studied to determine an organism’s chromosomal makeup and to detect genetic defects. Down syndrome is a genetic disorder that is also called trisomy 21. What would trisomy 21 look like in a karyotype? missing chromosome 21 extra chromosome 21 missing sex chromosome extra sex chromosome

OpenStudy (shadeyghost):

what do you think it is?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So, down syndrome occurs when there is an extra copy of chromosome pair 21, normally it would be just a pair to make 2, but the disorder causes a person to have 3 chromosome 21's. This extra chromosome can actually disrupt the course of normal development for a child causing the characteristics of down syndrome.
