Can someone help me? Find out how they got this answer

OpenStudy (anonymous):

\[\frac{ 3x-12y }{ 3 }\]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

when x=-2 and y=4 the answer is -18 but i keep getting -14

OpenStudy (johnweldon1993):

\[\large \frac{3x - 12y}{3}\] Plugging in x = -2 and y =4 \[\large \frac{3(-2) - 12(4)}{3}\] 3 times -2 is -6 ...12 times 4 is 48 so \[\large \frac{-6 - 48}{3}\] If you're already at -6 on a number line and you go 48 more negative you are at 54 so \[\large \frac{-54}{3} = -18\]
