OpenStudy (anonymous):

I dont know how to write a refutation for an essay

OpenStudy (jacobyboykin2398):

Provide a Background of What is Being Debated For each debate there is a basic background. Whether that debate is scientific, political, or something else, you need to familiarize yourself with what the background is so you can understand exactly what it is you are refuting. With regards to scientific papers, this may mean a medical, technological, or environmental problem that must be resolved. As such, you may find yourself refuting a hypothesis. Non-scientific arguments are usually made of philosophical interpretations of an event or problem, but may include some data. When writing your introduction, you should dedicate a little of your word count to demonstrating that you possess this background knowledge. Refute Points Step-by-Step Once you have introduced background knowledge of the debate, you need to begin refuting each point. Take the main points you want to refute. Write about what they are, and the proposed evidence for them. Once that has been discussed briefly, refute it using the evidence or counterarguments you found. Always ensure you state why the refutation is a stronger argument. Without doing this, you fail to refute. Conclude in Favor of the Refutation Once you have refuted each point, write a conclusion. This conclusion should briefly summarize all the points. It needs to act as the point of the essay at which you solidify the refutations made. If possible, gather solid evidence to strengthen what has been written in the essay so far. At this point, try not to be hypercritical of the original author. It may make your essay appear unprofessional. Being able to write a refutation essay allows you to explore the finer aspects of any debate. This can be a challenging task if you agree with the original argument. Even when this is the case, you can treat the essay as an opportunity to enlighten yourself to different approaches to a debate. If you disagree with the original author or argument, try not to let your opinions cloud your judgment. Failing to recognize any solid evidence presented could make you lose marks when the essay is being graded.
