Two trains leave the station at the same time, one heading west and the other east. The westbound train travels 14 miles per hour faster than the eastbound train. If the two trains are 640 miles apart after 4 hours, what is the rate of the westbound train? Do not do any rounding.

please help I'm really bad at math and I keep getting half way there on everything but i'm behind so I can't afford to be so slow in this =p =(

OpenStudy (anonymous):

rate times time is distance. Let r be the speed in mph for the west bound train. Then r-14 is the speed of the slow train that is east bound. (r+(r-14))*4 = 640 Solve the above for r. r = 73 mph

So I plug 73 into the equation or 73 is the answer?
