I think C is right.. Just need an explanation! The following data show the scores Gina obtained on 12 IQ tests: 93, 83, 74, 74, 83, 92, 93, 94, 90, 87, 83, 86 The box plot below represents the data:

Which of the following is shown incorrectly in the box plot? Median Lower quartile Upper quartile Maximum value

@amistre64

OpenStudy (anonymous):

hello @phi :') .

OpenStudy (phi):

sort the numbers little to big which number is exactly in the middle?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

give me a sec @phi

OpenStudy (anonymous):

83 and 86? @phi

OpenStudy (phi):

I get 74,74,83,83,83,86,87,90,92,93,93,94

OpenStudy (anonymous):

86 and 87 o.o @phi

OpenStudy (anonymous):

86 ^

OpenStudy (phi):

there are 12 numbers, #6 is 86 #7 is 87 for the median, average those 2 numbers. you get 86.5 your figure shows a median at 86.5 so that is correct

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so c is correct? :) @phi

OpenStudy (phi):

I haven't done the problem. But next, check, is the lowest number on the plot the same as the lowest number on the list?

OpenStudy (phi):

then check if the highest number 94 is what is shown on the plot

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I just got confused :/ @phi

OpenStudy (phi):

74,74,83,83,83,86,87,90,92,93,93,94 ^ | is 74 shown on your graph as the smallest number ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes thats where it starts

OpenStudy (phi):

so that part is correct now check the biggest number 74,74,83,83,83,86,87,90,92,93,93,94 does the graph show ^

OpenStudy (anonymous):

the line spreads out to 98 so C would be correct @phi

OpenStudy (phi):

The plot you posted shows the biggest number is 94. (where did you get 98?)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

sorry I got confused yes 94 is the biggest number. @phi

OpenStudy (phi):

so the plot shows the correct biggest number now divide the lower six numbers in half 74,74,83, 83,83,86, 87,90,92,93,93,94 ^ | the "box" starts at 83 (if it is correct)

OpenStudy (phi):

divide the upper 6 numbers into two parts 4,74,83, 83,83,86, 87,90,92, 93,93,94 ^ the box ends at 92

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i would add those 6 numbers up then divide by 6? @phi

OpenStudy (phi):

no, we just look at the smallest and biggest number of the "middle 6 numbers" 4,74,83, 83,83,86, 87,90,92, 93,93,94 start end those are for the start and end of the "box" does the box start at 83 does it end at 92 in your plot ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no ^

OpenStudy (anonymous):

well the box starts at 83

OpenStudy (phi):

right. the box starts at 83 but it does not end at 92. that means its upper quartile is wrong

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thanks a ton :) @phi gave u a medal btw :D

OpenStudy (phi):

they call the start of the box the "lower quartile" and the end of the box the "upper quartile"

OpenStudy (anonymous):

makes more sense thanks ! @phi
