Any ideas? Try taking out the subject or changing the subject and see if it sounds right.

Remember, if the verb is singular, the subject has to be singular. For example, A. Among the trees were <--- Plural. (It needs to be SINGULAR, was.) a lone gray squirrel <--- Singular. (There is only ONE squirrel.)
