Lincoln went through a long list of Generals who were to cautious or for whatever reason, were ineffective. Grants victory a Vicksburg convinced Lincoln that he had found a General who would fight.

Grant was know as a heavy drinker who did not get very good grades at West Point and served without distinction during the Mexican War. He had retired from the Army before the civil war stared.
