whether to be funny or serious depends on the mood, and how you want people around you to feel. I suggest you can be open with your family, but without dirty talk or pranks. but you don't have to be completely fakely polite either (since you are at home)

perhaps your mother wants you to practice being less "funny"' and be more polite in situations in an attempt to prepare you for the "outside world"
yah know, when you do something that's not really considered polite and make it a habit - parents get worried about your future and how people would think of you when you get older and leave the house
