ok... so if I r-write the data set as 31, 33, 37, 40, 40, 43, 47, 48, 50, 52, 56, 58 find the median value, this divides the data into 2 equal halves. then find the middle of the lower half... this is the lower quartile or Q1 the find the middle of the upper half... this is the upper quartile of Q3 then the interquartile range IQR = Q3 - Q1 there will be slight variations in the solution depending on where you live. I understanding in the US, the median is included when finding quartiles... hope it all makes sense.
