The U.S. Army at the time was relatively small and we needed a near exponential expansion to get into shape before going to Europe. Troops were trained and readied.
Secondly: Weapons and vehicles were contracted and built. Lots of trucks, guns, artillery pieces, knives etc had to be made.
Third: Propaganda was prepared to ease the country into the war. WWII is better known for this but the government during the Great War is known for doing this. It's really not a bad thing...just something to get the people in the war mood.

on the home front, people started rationing food supplies to save supplies for american troops. women started working in the factories when the men left. also, the men started enlisting. and,and people started buying war bonds to help finance the war effort.
