A box plot was made to represent the number of matches won by 14 participants in a tennis tournament. The box plot had the box shifted to the right so that the left tail was much longer than the right tail. Based on the box plot, which conclusion is correct?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The mean and median of matches won are equal. The mean of matches won is more than the median of matches won. Most of the participants won many matches, but there were some participants who won very few matches compared to the others. Most of the participants won very few matches, but there were some participants who won many matches compared to the others.

what are your thoughts?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I think its B

OpenStudy (amistre64):

thats a choice, not a thought, why would you want to pick B?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i dot know it was just a guess

OpenStudy (amistre64):

well im not into playing guessing games until we guess the right one.

OpenStudy (amistre64):

i need to know what your thinking about the options, the question wants to assess your understanding of the material so far

OpenStudy (amistre64):

did you draw a representation of the information?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no i didnt i really just dont understand this question

OpenStudy (amistre64):

its all about the properties of a box plot, if you dont know about the properties then the question isnt going to make much sense. we know everything isnt centered nice and pretty, so the measures of centrality are not going to be equal. do we keep or toss A?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes and C

OpenStudy (amistre64):

we cant keep A and pick C lets toss A since mean and median are measures of centrality the box itself is where most of the action is, it contains the most results. a box to the right means that everyone mostly does good, alot of high scorers.

OpenStudy (amistre64):

it also means that the few low scorers, pull the mean away from the middle. if we are averaging a B i class, and get 3 Fs on the next 3 assignment, our average grade doesnt go up does it?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no im not picking C im saying C is wrong i tried that one already

OpenStudy (amistre64):

The box plot had the box shifted to the right so that the left tail was much longer than the right tail. |dw:1430937278575:dw| getting lower grades lessens your mean grade, a long left tail lessens the mean. since the mean is pulled left, the mean and median are not equal A and B are out
