Oklahoma has done a pretty good job of doing that during the past 20 years, he said.

"The contrast between now and the 1980s is the rest of our economy has become much more diversified,” Meacham said.

"Back in the ’80s we were strictly an energy/agricultural state with just sprinklings of other activities. Now we have a very robust aerospace sector, a very robust biotechnology sector and other sectors that help us somewhat dampen impacts of lower prices,” he said.
