Marco Polo claimed to have traveled along the Silk Road as far as China. He was a trading merchant. He hoped to find goods to sell. He was from a family of merchants involved with trade along the silk road. Italian city/states were getting rich because lots of people were doing the same thing.
@wwhitlock
What was Marco Polo's greatest achievement, and what effect did this achievement have on civilization?
You already know about his trading activity. That's the same achievement as lots of other people of that time. The reason we know about Marco Polo is the book he wrote. It may not be all his personal experience, and he may not have been the first. But when his book was read throughout western Europe, it wasn't just Italians who wanted to get rich trading with China and the lands east of the Byzantine Empire.
What was the most significant change Marco Polo witnessed while on his travels?
I don't know about most significant change. He claimed to have lived in China and be appointed as a bureaucrat by Kublai Kahn. He came back to a different Italy. I'm not sure what the question is looking for.
