Take the first clause by itself, "its dense drone and unrelenting piano are strangely convincing partners."  I think it is talking about a piece of music with the different instruments playing.  Do you agree?

That is my thought.  It read like a critic discussing some music.  First we find out that it is odd, but some how works together and in the end we find it compelling, so we should listen to it.  At least that is what I think is coming across.
