Under Augusto Pinochet, Chile gained a reputation in the 1970s and 1980s for human rights violations. freely electing Marxists. protecting political parties. having a stable economy.

OpenStudy (wwhitlock):

Pinochet was leader of the economic stabilization know as the "Chilean Miracle" But he was a harsh military leader who committed lots of human rights violations. So it could go either way. Chile ended up unelecting him, (56% voted in favor of having him step down) and he did give up the presidency 2 years after the vote. Chile ended up with a great economy but it wasn't always pretty.
