The British were better trained, employed German mercenaries and still couldn't catch the Americans. Without French help, the Americans might not have won decisively but could have just kept running around out of British reach until the got tired of chasing them

Yup. Benjamen Franklin spent a long time in Paris convince the French to help. We had no Navy, they did. That was the difference at Yorktown.
