There were a lot of reasons, but the short short answer was that Gorbachev (the new leader of the USSR during the 80s) initiated many reforms that ultimately led to its collapse. The irony is that he hoped that by opening up the USSR and pulling away some of its restrictions (on things like press) would help -- he wanted to improve life in the Soviet Union, not destroy it.
