OpenStudy (lifeisadangerousgame):

For a problem like Which of the points P(1,-2) or Q(8,9) is closer to the point A(5,3)? is there a really simple way of solving?

OpenStudy (misty1212):

HI and no

OpenStudy (lifeisadangerousgame):

How would you solve it?

OpenStudy (misty1212):

compute the distance for each it is not that hard

OpenStudy (misty1212):

you need the distance formula

OpenStudy (lifeisadangerousgame):

I'm not saying it's hard, I was just asking if there was a simpler way.

OpenStudy (misty1212):

no i don't think it is obvious without doing that

OpenStudy (lifeisadangerousgame):

Okay, thanks ^_^

OpenStudy (misty1212):

\[\sqrt{4^2+5^2}\] for the first pair\[\sqrt{3^2+6^2}\] for the second actually you can ignore the square roots if you just want to compare the numbers
