New to Open Study, any advice on how to start practicing speaking/reading Japanese? I've got the Hiragana down and am working on the Katakana.

You could try watching anime.

thats an idea!

One possible thing to read kana is to watch subtitled songs on YouTube. Just ignore the kanji until you can read them. Find a singer or group you like, with songs that are not too fast. https://youtu.be/jXWCrmJyUZ8 Children songs are easier because they write most kanji in hiragana. You can begin with Totoro or Ponyo! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5ENHACSmlWI https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RipmUr-u5do

You're not alone. I suggest taking cassette like Pimsleur, or getting "My Japanese Coach" for your DS.
