please help

question 3 The distances (y), in miles, of two cars from their starting points at certain times (x), in hours, are shown by the equations below: Car A y = 45x + 20 Car B y = 35x + 60 After how many hours will the two cars be at the same distance from their starting point and what will that distance be? 3 hours, 200 miles 3 hours, 180 miles 4 hours, 200 miles 4 hours, 180 miles

@BloomLocke367

OpenStudy (anonymous):

this is the last one

OpenStudy (anonymous):

once again thank you for all the help!

OpenStudy (bloomlocke367):

we can do the same as last time or substitution, whichever you'd like

OpenStudy (anonymous):

lets try the gragh

OpenStudy (anonymous):

what was theat site you used for that

OpenStudy (bloomlocke367):

okay.

OpenStudy (bloomlocke367):

https://www.desmos.com/calculator

OpenStudy (anonymous):

wow i have no idea how to use that site :)

OpenStudy (bloomlocke367):

haha, it's okay. I think it'll be better to use substitution

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay

OpenStudy (anonymous):

this one is weird because it has weird answers

OpenStudy (bloomlocke367):

set the 2 equations equal to each other to get \(45x+20=35x+60\)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i understand

OpenStudy (anonymous):

wait i dont understand

OpenStudy (bloomlocke367):

what don't you understand?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

didnt you already set them up

OpenStudy (bloomlocke367):

what do you mean?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

you are telling me to set them up to be equal and didnt you already do that

OpenStudy (bloomlocke367):

I guess, I don't know XD I did it to show you what i meant XD

OpenStudy (anonymous):

haha LOL

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so is that what i needed to do

OpenStudy (bloomlocke367):

yes

OpenStudy (bloomlocke367):

then solve for x, do you know how to do that?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

do you add them?

OpenStudy (bloomlocke367):

what's them?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

45x and 35x

OpenStudy (anonymous):

right?

OpenStudy (bloomlocke367):

no, you'd subtract... to get x on one side

OpenStudy (anonymous):

10x+ 40

OpenStudy (anonymous):

10x

OpenStudy (bloomlocke367):

you'd have \(10x+20=60\) then you subtract 20 from both sides to get \(10x=40\)

OpenStudy (bloomlocke367):

now you divide both sides by 10

OpenStudy (anonymous):

10 cancels out and 40/10 = 4

OpenStudy (bloomlocke367):

yes, so x=4

OpenStudy (bloomlocke367):

and x represents hours so you can already rule out 2 answers

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yup c and d

OpenStudy (bloomlocke367):

now, pick an equation and plug 4 in for x

OpenStudy (anonymous):

y = 45(4) + 20 200

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so the answer is 4 hours, 200 miles

OpenStudy (bloomlocke367):

yep!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yyyyyeeeeeeeesssssss!!!!!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR ALLA THE HELP

OpenStudy (bloomlocke367):

YOU'RE WELCOME! do you understand now?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

YES

OpenStudy (anonymous):

you are the best

OpenStudy (bloomlocke367):

thank you c: I try XD

OpenStudy (hijacktrolo):

also not to be rude or anything but you did a great job of explaining but all ya had to do was fit every choice that was there into y and x and then you would have seen that c was the answer but good job of doing it thoroughly. :)
