The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints was founded in 1830 by Joseph Smith in the state of New York. Members of the Church became known as Mormons because of their belief in The Book of Mormon, in addition to the Bible, as scripture. Members were persecuted because of their beliefs. They went to Ohio, Missouri then Illinois trying to get religious freedom. In Illinois, Smith and his brother were imprisoned by Church enemies. While in jail, a mob attacked the jail and both Joseph and Hyrum were killed.
