OpenStudy (wwhitlock):

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints are often called Mormons because of their belief that The Book of Mormon is scripture along with the Bible. Joseph Smith translated the Book of Mormon as one evidence that he was a prophet, they believe. Smith founded the Church in 1830 in New York. Followers of Smith were persecuted in New York, then Ohio, Missouri and Illinois. Each move, they sought religious freedom. In Illinois Smith and his brother Hyrum were put in jail, again, as part of the persecution. A mob attacked the jail and killed both men. Brigham Young became the leader of the Church and lead them to Utah. The Church is headquartered there today.
