that's finding the volume of a rectangular figure.
to find the area of a SQUARE (not a cube)
you simply do x^2, or in this case, 9^2, or 9x9

yes, and since the cube has 6 square faces, you multiply the area of a square face (81) by 6, and you get your surface area
