Hmm. I don't know much about literary history and trends, but I thought the novel became a popular medium while the British middle class was expanding. Then again, it is easier to direct address a single person reading the novel than it is to try and pass the same message to people during theatre plays. Your guess is probably as good as mine. Well, better I would imagine since I have not kept up on this type of stuff.
