Please Help (3x + 4) (x-2) 1) 3x^2-2x-8 2) x-8 3) 3x-2x-8 4) 3x^2+2x+8 I think the answer is 3 but I am not sure. I think it is 3 because combining like terms 3x*x =3x^2 and the 4*-2 would equal -8 but I am not sure what I am supposed to do.

OpenStudy (hockeychick23):

first do 3x*x next: 3x* -2 next: 4*x next: 4* -2

OpenStudy (anonymous):

But the second step leaves me with -6x and then -8x? or is it 3x^2

OpenStudy (hockeychick23):

theres no -8x

OpenStudy (hockeychick23):

3x*x= ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

3x or 3x^2 i am not sure

OpenStudy (hockeychick23):

3x^2, you have to x's

OpenStudy (anonymous):

OK thanks

OpenStudy (hockeychick23):

yea, so what is -2*3x

OpenStudy (anonymous):

-6x

OpenStudy (hockeychick23):

good so now what is 4*x

OpenStudy (anonymous):

4x

OpenStudy (hockeychick23):

good, now -2*4

OpenStudy (anonymous):

-8

OpenStudy (hockeychick23):

good so we have: 3x^2-6x+4x-8 so now combine like terms

OpenStudy (anonymous):

3x^2-10x-8 ?

OpenStudy (hockeychick23):

no, what is 4x-6x?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Oh -2x

OpenStudy (hockeychick23):

yes, so we have 3x^2-2x-8

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So it's the first one. Thank you so much for taking the time to explain it to me everyone else tries to give me the answer and I don't like that.

OpenStudy (hockeychick23):

yep its the first one :) and no problem!
