A is correct, so you were right. because you add up 8 + 3 + 6 and you get 17
then you add 5/9 + 4/9, which since the denominators are the same you just add the top, then it becomes 9/9 which add one to your 17. which then makes it 18. but then all thats left over is 5/6 so its 18 5/6
