An idea: Want to hold a Math helpathon on Sunday t 2 pm PT. Comments?
math helpathon?
Interesting idea! How will it go? Like are there any awards, etc?
what exactly is that?
Help-a-thon @Thesmarterone
We get out Math helpers online, and answering as many questions as they can...
*our*
hmmm...sounds fun!...only problem is I am a horrible mathematician -_-
Lol self explanatory but yes we should but will there be alot of questions thats the difficult part.
idk. I rely on you to spread the word...
I will spread in the chats if you would like :)
Just for exams....
Hm we will. But how will it work. Will there be someone keeping score or something.
Wait till jigglypuff confirms time.
okay :P
Oh ok :D
Ok! :)
what score jag?
I personally would not be able to attend, but I can organize it
he is asking if there is going to be a score keeper.
to keep what score? I don't understand.
I don't either :{
would it be like a competition where helpers try to answer the most questions ofr some sort of prize? is the question
yea that is what I thought...
^thats what i meant or is it like a fundraiser where you pay to play @Preetha
Hmmmm. I had not thought fit as a competition. Maybe a goal. Lets try to answer 100 questions in an hour. Or something like that.
sounds challenging! :)
Hm 100questions in math
*of it*
I'll accept the challenge :)
We will need quite a lot of askers around. x)
It should be higher @Preetha b.c i think we do twice that in a day.
I can't, and certainly not in math XP
can it be any subject? maybe only 3?
We do about 1000-2000 in a day. But it is not evenly distributed.
@jagr2713 helpathon is in a 1 or 2 hour time phrame
Heres the problem @Preetha some people might ask like ridiculous questions like * Whats 2+2* or whats a whats 3+9
10+9 ;)
spamming...just ignore it @jagr2713
@Preetha I personally would not be able to attend, but I can organize it
Idk i will do it but i would say that those questions do not count as a question @Preetha
thanks Sleepyhead. Let me get some more thoughts on the table. I had not thought of a goal or a score...
maybe keep score and whoever reaches the goal first gets a prize?
Scores will cause fights and chaos. i would said a goal.
say*
or what @jagr2713 said, but I think a little competition would be best...
Yea but not like * Winner gets 300owlbucks or something*
Well, the goal is to help people who are preparing for exams.
Oh no! that is just ridiculous jagr
If I set up a competition - then you will all try to game it. Lest face it. You are a generation of gamers. (-:
Finals dont only consist of math @Preetha
yes preetha we are.
Yes, but that is our biggest group.
True
Personally, I'd need more help with history for finals than math...
me too! I don't have math :P
igreen would win or satelitte if it were going to be a competition no, if anything consider giving a prize for the prettiest essay written by someone who got helped via this event
I finished math, and said I am done.
History doesnt have alot of helpers thou
@sleepyhead314 makes a point.
yea satellite would win
I already completed my History Finals. Back in February. @BloomLocke367 Along with Vocabulary and Language/English. XD
@iGreen would most likely win.
I know, and it's kind of frustrating. Is there a way to get more helpers in certain subjects?
we can consider holdinga history later mathematics as a test to see how well it goes :)
It all depends on who wants to help @BloomLocke367
I like @sleepyhead314's idea
We cant just say to someone who has no experience in history to Go help in history. @BloomLocke367
I know THAT.
I don't know... I just think it's unfair that math gets the most attention.
Well Math \(is\) the busiest section of all and has the most members, no doubt about it.
nothings fair @BloomLocke367
Well like i said it all depends on who comes on the site. If the person is good at math they go to math @BloomLocke367
It is just that we need more history people. Its not unfair.
Yeah.. you're right.
:D i am a helper on history and so is paki and rest. Sometimes we are not online but math on the other hand has alot of helpers and when one is Offline, then another one pops up.
I know, I think you may have helped me in History..
I dont know lol i helped alot :D
I wanted to hol a latex tournament... but i could never get your attention... anyway... this seems interesting :)
Personally I won't be participating, but oh well... that does seem interesting x'D
There should be a way to keep score of how many questions everyone answered during the time that the competition is being held. Think a developer could make something to calculate those type of things for the math helpathon and future similar events?
Dan will win c: hehe
He always wins.
A few of my concerns: It would be good to reinforce that it should be legitimate help and working through the solutions with the asked user. There are too many cases where I am seeing the answer just given out. A race to see who can answer the most questions, might turn into just that. Especially without reinforcement of the guidelines to answering questions. On the flip side, I do realize that this could result in motivating and getting more people involved in answering, allowing a possibility for greater influx of new OS users. I do however worry that it doesn't turn into a case where the fresh blood is drawn toward the site for answers like yahoo help and some other well known physics forums. Where it's just a trade for answers and reputation points, and the asker to helper interaction is lost. On the long run, It would get hard to control the habits of the general OS users once there are too many drawn to the site for the wrong reasons.
No, i always win... which is actually why im not participating LOL
I do support the decision for the math-helpathon though :) Just hoping the principles of OS are not compromised.
I really like this idea :D I would definitely help answer questions :)
sounds fun! :)
@dan815 agree
My viewpoint, Sunday [and even Saturday for all it matters] is a day when there are not that many questions getting asked. Maybe on the weekdays there will be more of a crowd and and more questions getting asked, which means more questions to answer. The time, it HAS to be during the day for people in US. I've been on OS at night, there are very few questions asked and a lot of helpers. Also, @dan815 has brought up some good points. There needs to be some sort of accountability, otherwise there will be a lot of direct answers thrown about.

^^
Can anyone enter? how does it work? Like.. the point system.
