I have to do a project and make a volcano. I am doing diet coke and mentos. Will cafine free diet coke work?

OpenStudy (matt101):

My guess would be yes, because the caffeine in the coke isn't really involved in the "reaction" between the coke and the mentos. In fact, from what I understand, no chemical reaction is actually occurring (you aren't producing a new substance). Instead, when you drop mentos into the coke, the carbon dioxide gas that is dissolved in the coke begins to accumulate on the surface of the mentos, forming big bubbles that rise and produce the volcano effect that you see.

thank you

So I can still use cafine free diet coke?

OpenStudy (joannablackwelder):

Yes, that should be fine.

OpenStudy (joannablackwelder):

The caffeine and the sugar are not part of the reaction. It is the phosphoric acid in the coke that reacts with the mentos.

It would be okay! But go for vinegar and baking soda. Add some red paint and food coloring and tons of shower gel.
