An earthquake has a magnitude 7 on the Richter Scale. How many times greater are ground disturbances for this earthquake than for an earthquake with a magnitude 4 on the Richter Scale? Can you help me calculate this?

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

Each jump from whole number to whole number represents a factor of 10 so say from 4 to 5 is times ten in magnitude from 4 to 6 is times 100 (10*10 = 100) etc etc

1000 times greater?

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

yes the jump from 4 to 7 is 1000 times in magnitude a 7.0 is 1000 times stronger than a 4.0
