OpenStudy (theyankee):

Mass-produced housing developments began to appear near highways. As men returned home from the war, they were granted GI bills, which gave them more funding to focus on building or buying home rather than living in cramped apartments in the cities. As new families began to grow for the world war veterans and their wives, they began to build larger homes near each other (suburbs), thinking it would be a safer place to raise children.
