How do viruses start on a computer? Can they be transferred to a site?

Starts out with malware . If the sharing option is enabled I think it will infect any computer connected to the network(even wireless connection). Viruses are often spread through attachments in email messages or internet downloads.

it depends on how it was written, don't think of it as an actual virus, trying to multiply, but as a program designed to be annoying, damaging, intrusive, or so forth.  if the programmer just has it install on one host then it will only be on that computer and no more.

what do you mean by "transferred to sites"?
like do you mean, putting them on the site to infect it?
or to make it when you visit the site you get the virus/malware?
