Jerry initially refuses to contribute as much as possible to his father’s birthday gift, but he soon realizes the error of his ways; later, when presented with another opportunity to help a family member, Jerry is generous and selfless enough to sell his most prized card so that Armand may take his girlfriend to the dance; the narrator in “The White Umbrella” is ashamed of her mother and makes up lies about her, including that she is a concert pianist; the narrator even says that she wishes her piano teacher were her mother; after the car accident, however, the narrator realizes how much she loves her mother and how selfish she has been; she immediately gets rid of the umbrella, a symbol of the shame she felt.

The pain and the burden she thought she had felled herself with the umbrella she had it was making her life crumble into pieces as she goes the white umbrella is following along the path that she  her self created she wished that one day that she never found that white umbrella because it was making the time and time shorter for her life and it was her bad luck.
